Ceramists' Art in the Shop

Discover the art of handmade ceramics from Grottaglie

A journey through Apulian tradition

The ceramics of Grottaglie, in the province of Taranto, represent one of the oldest and most fascinating artisan traditions in Southern Italy. This art form, deeply rooted in the local area, developed thanks to the abundance of local clay, an essential element in the production of ceramics.

Even today, the famous Ceramics District remains the beating heart of this tradition: a unique place where historic shops and artisanal workshops continue to pass down centuries-old techniques from one generation to the next.

The Excellence of Craftsmanship

Grottaglie ceramics are prized for their beauty, durability, and versatility. Originally used as everyday objects, today they are true works of design and art.

Artisans create a wide range of products:

tableware such as plates, oil cruets, and glasses
traditional jars and containers
decorative pumi, symbols of prosperity
ornamental pieces inspired by nature, such as fruit, flowers, and trees
artistic wall tiles
Each creation features vibrant colors and unique shapes that reflect Mediterranean tradition.

A World-Renowned Heritage

Today, Grottaglie ceramics are known and appreciated worldwide. They are displayed in museums, exhibitions, and art markets, representing the excellence of Italian craftsmanship.

Visiting the Ceramics District means enjoying an authentic experience: watching artisans at work and purchasing original pieces directly from local workshops.

Pupe, Knights, Dolls

According to an ancient legend, in the days of the ius primae noctis, young brides from the village were forced to spend their wedding night with the prince.

A young man in love, determined not to give up his beloved, devised a daring plan: he disguised himself as a woman and presented himself at court in her place. But just at the decisive moment, something went wrong… in his haste, he had forgotten to shave off his mustache.

Discovered and mocked by the prince, he thus gave rise to the legend of the Pupa Baffuta, an ironic and rebellious symbol of Grottaglie’s folk tradition.

Today, this figure lives on in the creations of master potters, becoming one of the most iconic artifacts of the local tradition. In our shop, the Pupa Baffuta is reinterpreted in both traditional and modern styles, making it a perfect decorative element to enrich any space with originality and style.

Lighting

Light and Shadow

Visit our showcase and discover our full range of table lamps and chandeliers, designed to add a touch of original elegance to your home.

Each piece is made entirely by hand, one by one, becoming a true piece of furniture capable of enhancing every space in your home.

Thanks to the skill of artisan hands and the traditional fretwork technique, these ceramics are transformed into captivating diffusers of light and shadow: the internal light, filtering through the holes, creates a unique atmosphere, projecting evocative geometric patterns onto walls and ceilings.

All our products come complete with a cord and lamp holder. Upon request, LED bulbs with the desired light temperature (Kelvin) can be added, so they perfectly adapt to the environment in which they will be placed.

The “Tableware” category also features our oil cruets, ideal for enhancing your everyday table setting or for creating original and refined party favors, perfect for commemorating your special events in a unique way.

Production and Delivery Times – Handcrafted Ceramics

All of our handcrafted ceramics are made entirely by hand using traditional techniques.

For this reason, production times—which range from 20 to 40 business days, depending on the model chosen and any requested customizations—must be added to the standard shipping times.

These lead times guarantee the authenticity of the product and encompass all stages of the artisanal process: shaping, first firing, decoration, and second firing, in full compliance with the Grottaglie ceramic tradition and the Made in Italy standard.

Some items, however, are available for immediate delivery: after careful packaging, they are shipped and delivered within 4–5 business days of the order.
